Asam Laksa, also known as Penang Laksa, is a specialty of Penang Island. The soup is made with mackerel and its main distinguishing feature is tamarind (called in Malay “asam”) which gives the soup a sour and appetizing taste. The other ingredients such as fresh Malaysian spices and herbs were purchased in local morning markets in Malaysia.
